HAMILTON, N.Y. — Eighth-ranked Colgate scored twice early and leaned on its defense late to beat Union 3-1 in women’s college hockey on Saturday, even as Union sophomore goaltender Emma Rheaume made 41 saves.

Rheaume faced 44 shots and set a career high, topping the 39 stops she made in a game at Hamilton a season ago. She turned away nine in the second period alone to keep the visitors within a goal.

Taylor Senecal put the Raiders on the board 3:03 into the game with the first goal of her career, and Emma Pais stripped a Union defender and went around the goalie for a 2-0 lead at 7:00. Klara Kenttala answered for Union at 11:29 of the first period with a shot under the crossbar, and the score stayed 2-1 into the third.

Union had five power plays and pulled Rheaume with 1:21 left to skate six attackers against four, but Colgate held. Ava Wood then cleared the puck the length of the ice into the empty net for the final margin.

Brooke Davis stopped 23 shots for Colgate. The Raiders improved to 8-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in ECAC play, and they are now 49-0-3 all-time against Union, which fell to 6-4-0 and 1-3-0. Colgate plays at Princeton on Friday.

Union plays at RPI in Troy, N.Y., on Tuesday, Nov. 3, then hosts St. Lawrence on Nov. 6 and No. 10 Clarkson on Nov. 7 at M&T Bank Center.
