ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have parted ways with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the team said Tuesday, one day after he finished serving a one-game league suspension.

The NFL suspended the 28-year-old after he spat toward Las Vegas Raiders players during a Week 6 game. He was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and thrown out of that game, then sat out Buffalo’s Week 8 win over Baltimore.

His suspension kept him off the 53-player count for Week 8, and Buffalo used the open spot to sign defensive back Te’Cory Couch on Oct. 31. The team said Couch stays on the roster.

Gardner-Johnson joined the Bills in March on a one-year deal worth $6 million. In six games, all starts, he recorded 26 tackles and picked off one pass. Opposing passers completed 64.7 percent of their throws against him with an 83.5 rating.

Damar Hamlin started in his place against the Ravens and posted five tackles and a pass defended, putting him in line to keep the job.

A fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2019 out of Florida, Gardner-Johnson has also played for the Eagles, Lions, Texans, Ravens and Bears.
