WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Capitals spent most of Tuesday night chasing the Dallas Stars at Capital One Arena and came up one goal short, losing 6-5 for their second defeat in a row.
Dallas took control in the second period. Forward Jason Robertson scored three straight goals in a span of 5:20, the seventh hat trick of his NHL career, and the Stars were up 4-0 before the period was six minutes old. That chased starting goalie Logan Thompson at 5:43 after four goals on 11 shots, and Charlie Lindgren stopped nine shots the rest of the way.
Washington fought back. Jordan Kyrou finished with three points on one goal and two helpers. Jakob Chychrun and Ryan Leonard both scored and set up another goal. Leonard scored with the goalie pulled at 18:58 of the third period to make it 6-5, but the Capitals could not find the equalizer.
Mikko Rantanen scored for Dallas to reach 800 career NHL points. Washington falls to 8-6-0, while the Stars improve to 9-5-1.
