CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy put together their most productive attack of the season on Saturday, beating Austin FC 4-1 at Dignity Health Sports Park in their last regular-season home match and staying alive in the Western Conference playoff race.
Joao Klauss started the scoring in the 10th minute after Sergi Roberto stole a clearance deep in Austin territory and Harbor Miller slid the ball to him in the box. The goal was the Brazilian forward’s 10th of the MLS season. Hirving Lozano, back from an injury picked up with Mexico’s national team, headed in a Marco Reus cross at the far post in the 38th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Robert Taylor, facing the club he used to play for, made it 3-0 three minutes after the break. Ervin Torres curled in a shot from outside the area for Austin in the 54th minute, but Roberto restored the three-goal cushion in the 66th with his first MLS goal, finishing alone after a headed pass from Reus.
Reus finished with three assists, a club season high, and Miller, a 19-year-old homegrown player, had two. Klauss also picked up his first league assist of the year.
The win lifted the Galaxy to 11-11-11 and 41 points, three points back of LAFC, the sixth-place club, which meets Minnesota on Sunday. LA has not lost at home since July 22. Austin fell to 8-15-10. The Galaxy close the regular season at Real Salt Lake next Saturday, while Austin hosts Portland.
