WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Nationals added a young infielder Sunday night, acquiring second baseman Nate Furman from the San Francisco Giants for minor league pitcher Tony Neubeck in a deal that brings a left-handed bat to Washington, D.C.
It is another early offseason move for Nationals president of baseball operations Paul Toboni, coming days after the club made a waiver claim.
Furman, 25, reached the majors for the first time this season. He struggled in a short look, batting .125 over 22 games with San Francisco. His numbers at Triple-A Sacramento were far better: a .293 average, a .791 OPS and a career-best 48 RBIs across 102 games.
The Giants needed roster room. Clubs must reinstate their 60-day injured players to full rosters on Monday, and San Francisco has second base covered by Casey Schmitt and Marcelo Mayer. Furman plays only that position.
Neubeck, a 23-year-old lefty who pitched in college at Indiana, went undrafted, signed with San Francisco this summer and has made only a handful of Single-A appearances. He is not on the 40-man roster.
