WASHINGTON, D.C. — Council member Janeese Lewis George is projected to be the next mayor of Washington, D.C., after a lopsided win in Tuesday’s general election.

With roughly 83.4% of the expected vote counted, Council member Lewis George, a Democrat, held about 84.3 % of the vote. Independent Rhonda Hamilton was second with about 10.1 %, and independent Robert Gross had roughly 3.5 %. The count stood at 179,674 ballots, with an estimated 36,000 still to be tallied.

The race had no incumbent. Mayor Muriel Bowser chose not to seek another term, leaving the office open.

The District will also send a new face to Capitol Hill. Robert White is projected to win the race for delegate to the U.S. House, succeeding Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who also chose not to run again.

Results remain unofficial until the D.C. Board of Elections finishes counting and certifies the vote.
