WASHINGTON, D.C. — Floriana, the Italian restaurant that has anchored a stretch of 17th Street in Dupont Circle for 47 years, will serve its last meals in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 31 and move across the river to Old Town Alexandria.
The restaurant shared the news on Instagram on Nov. 4 and gave no reason for leaving. It also has not said when the Virginia location will open.
The new home is planned for 277 S. Washington St. in Alexandria. When Floriana first announced the Old Town project last December, it billed that space as a fourth location rather than a replacement for Dupont Circle.
Floriana opened in 1979 and over the years became a regular stop for neighborhood traditions and Pride gatherings. In 2021, then Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff stopped in while visiting local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gift cards will still be good at the Alexandria restaurant, which will sit under a mile from the Metro stop at King Street-Old Town. The company also runs restaurants in Wilmington, Delaware, and North Carolina and plans to open in Huntsville, Alabama.
