WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new arts hub opens Friday, Oct. 23, in Southwest Washington, giving three nonprofit groups a shared address at 340 Maple Drive SW, a short walk from the Wharf.
The Revada Arts Center will house the Theater Alliance company, the IN Series opera group and 4EYE Film Center, a new arthouse cinema. The building includes a black box theater, a small cinema, a rehearsal studio, a scene shop and a co-working area that runs as a cafe in the daytime and a bar at night.
Theater Alliance spent 13 years in Anacostia before losing that home. It found the Southwest space, once an unfinished ground floor of an apartment building, through a city pilot program under Mayor Muriel Bowser that makes vacant storefronts easier to use. The center is named for the Revada Foundation, its largest donor.
A Friday ribbon cutting starts a multi-day festival. Saturday, Oct. 24, brings a Community Day with music classes, acting workshops and creative play from noon to 2 p.m., then an open house with building tours from 2 to 4 p.m.
Ward 6 Council member Charles Allen welcomed the partnership, saying it gives the local arts scene a chance to reach new audiences.
