WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Capitals had their three-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon, falling 5-1 to the Minnesota Wild at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., in the first of three straight home games.
Minnesota struck twice before the six-minute mark. Quinn Hughes beat goaltender Logan Thompson at 3:42 of the first period, and Michael McCarron scored about two minutes later after a pass from Bobby Brink caromed off Blake Coleman. Coach Spencer Carbery said his team was not sharp early, pointing to a botched breakout and a lost battle on the wall.
Washington played the Wild close for much of the final two periods. Justin Sourdif tipped a Cole Hutson point shot past Jesper Wallstedt with six seconds left in the second to make it 2-1, but Wallstedt finished with 26 saves on 27 shots for his ninth win.
Minnesota pulled away in the third. Kirill Kaprizov reached 500 career points with an empty-net goal, and Maxim Shabanov and Danila Yurov also scored. Thompson stopped 24 shots.
The Capitals drop to 8-5-0, while the Wild improve to 10-3-3.
