DENVER — Down 11 in the fourth quarter Sunday, the Broncos scored the last 15 points and then survived a frantic Kansas City push at the goal line to beat the Chiefs 28-24 and move atop the AFC West.
The finish came down to the final snap. Kansas City reached the Denver 1 inside the last 15 seconds, and the Broncos held on second and third down. Patrick Mahomes appeared to throw a winning touchdown on fourth down, but a false start on tackle Jaylon Moore erased it. From the 6 with four seconds left, Jonathon Cooper flushed Mahomes and Malcolm Roach dropped him to end it.
Bo Nix struggled for three quarters, sitting at 15 of 26 for 153 yards as the crowd booed. He then went 5 of 6 for 84 yards in the fourth. His 2-yard scoring toss to tight end Nate Adkins plus a two-point catch by Jaylen Waddle cut the gap to three.
Kansas City had a chance to push the lead back to six, but Harrison Butker missed wide right from 54 yards in the rain, one play after an Alex Singleton sack. Butker is 2 of 7 from 50 yards or longer this season.
Rookie Jonah Coleman then took a short pass 51 yards to the Kansas City 5 and ran in the go-ahead score on the next play. He finished with a career-high 104 yards from scrimmage. Nix now has 15 game-winning drives, an NFL record for a quarterback in his first three seasons.
Mahomes threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, and Kenneth Walker was held to 69 rushing yards. Denver improved to 6-2 with a fourth straight win, while Kansas City fell to 5-2 after a second consecutive loss.
