WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Valparaiso walked into Mackey Arena on Friday night and left with one of the biggest wins in program history, beating Purdue 83-80 in double overtime when Justus McNair buried a 3-pointer as the clock hit zero.
The loss leaves Purdue 0-2, the first time the Boilermakers have opened a season that way since 1976. Valparaiso moved to 2-0 and beat Purdue for the first time since 1965.
It was also the first win over a Big Ten opponent for the Beacons since 2004, and it ended a run of 19 straight losses at Mackey Arena by Missouri Valley Conference teams that dated to 1978.
The game should never have reached a second extra period. Purdue led 70-67 in the closing seconds of the first overtime and fouled to keep Valpo from shooting a 3. Rakim Chaney missed the first free throw, chased down his own miss and drilled a 3 from the corner as time ran out to tie it at 70.
In the second overtime, Purdue went ahead 78-77 on a pair of C.J. Cox free throws and a Daniel Jacobsen dunk, but JT Pettigrew answered from the top of the key. A Jacobsen jumper made it 80-80 with 4.4 seconds remaining before McNair, who scored all 17 of his points after halftime, delivered the winner.
Chaney finished with a career-high 35 points on 14-of-22 shooting before fouling out. Jacobsen led Purdue with a career-best 28 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, and Cox added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Valpo shot 46.5 percent from the floor to 37.5 percent for Purdue, which won the rebounding battle 46-37. Purdue hosts Illinois State on Monday night.
