WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Wizards get a quick shot at payback Friday night, when the Charlotte Hornets come to Capital One Arena for both teams’ first game of Emirates NBA Cup group play. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Charlotte took the first meeting 110-103 on Monday. Washington sits at 2-3 and Charlotte at 3-2 heading into the rematch.
This year’s Wizards roster looks nothing like the one that won only 17, 18 and 15 games over the last three seasons. Veterans Trae Young and Anthony Davis now play alongside AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall draft pick. Davis leads the club at 21.8 points and 8.4 rebounds a game, while Young has hit a team-high two 3-pointers per night.
Shooting from deep has been the sore spot. Washington makes 9.0 threes a game, the fewest in the league, on 28.5% accuracy. Charlotte counters with Brandon Miller, who is scoring 25.6 points a game, and Moussa Diabate, who pulls down 9.4 rebounds.
The Wizards and Hornets share East Group C with Boston, Atlanta and Chicago. A year ago Washington managed a single win against those four opponents, and none of the five clubs got out of group play last season. Washington visits Atlanta on Nov. 6.
