DETROIT, Mich. — Jack Campbell was still in a Detroit-area hospital on Monday, a day after the Lions linebacker was carted off Ford Field with a neck injury, but the team said the first signs of his recovery are encouraging.
In a statement released Monday, the Lions said Campbell is resting and recovering and that preliminary indications are positive. The team said it would not release more details for now, citing respect for Campbell and his family.
Campbell went down on the first play of the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings while tackling tight end T.J. Hockenson, a fellow former Iowa player. He stayed motionless on the turf and was treated on the field for about nine minutes before he was placed on a backboard and taken off on a cart. Players from both teams gathered as he received care.
Head coach Dan Campbell, who is not related to the linebacker, spoke to reporters about half an hour after the statement went out. He called the news positive, thanked fans for their prayers and asked them to keep praying. He said he visited the linebacker at the hospital Sunday night and spoke with his parents and wife.
Campbell, 26, is a team captain in his fourth NFL season and was named an All-Pro last year. He signed a four-year, $81 million contract extension with Detroit in May.
