RALEIGH, N.C. — NC State will put up the money, facilities and NIL backing its next football coach needs, according to a letter to fans released Wednesday under the names of Boo Corrigan, the athletics director, and Chancellor Kevin Howell, days after the school fired Dave Doeren.
The pledge answers a pointed parting message from Doeren. Dismissed with the team sitting at 3-4 in his 14th year, the most successful coach the program has had said in a farewell address Tuesday that the school had to match its resources to what it expects from the team.
The letter sets a goal for NC State to contend for ACC titles and be in the College Football Playoff picture every season. That would be new ground: the program has not won a conference football championship since 1979, has never played in the ACC title game, and has just one season of 10 or more wins. The playoff field grows from 12 teams to 24 starting in 2027.
The athletics director will run what the school called a confidential national search. Two former Wolfpack players will advise him. Bill Cowher, a Hall of Fame coach who won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers, played linebacker at NC State. Dewayne Washington, a defensive back taken in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft, spent the 1998 through 2003 seasons as a Pittsburgh cornerback under Cowher.
A $1 million donation from Washington and his spouse in 2021, split between the humanities college and the football program, is why the team locker room carries his name.
Todd Goebbel remains the interim coach through season’s end. His next game is Saturday at home, Carter-Finley Stadium, where Cal visits.
