NORMAN, Okla. — East Texas A&M opened its season with one of the biggest surprises of the first night of college basketball, beating Oklahoma 68-64 on Monday at Lloyd Noble Center.
The loss ended a 30-game home winning streak for the Sooners, who were heavy favorites against a Lions team picked to finish last in the Southland Conference.
Bo Aldridge led East Texas A&M with 22 points and sealed it by making two free throws with three seconds left. Alonzo Dodd knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 15 before fouling out in the second half, and Mohamed Diakite also had 15.
The Lions went up by 16 early in the second half after making their first three tries from deep after the break. Oklahoma answered with 13 points in a row and tied the game with just under five minutes to go, then tied it again inside the final four minutes. Aldridge scored on a drive with 2:33 left to start a 6-0 Lions burst.
A three-point play by Pop Isaacs pulled the Sooners within two with 25 seconds left, but Oklahoma missed its last two looks. Isaacs scored 15 for Oklahoma and Derrion Reid added 14. The Sooners made only 17 of 32 free throws and were beaten 16-7 on second-chance points.
An injury kept Xzayvier Brown, the top returning scorer for the Sooners, out of the lineup. Oklahoma is back home Friday against Mississippi Valley State.
